Dairy industry faces serious setback |

Dhaka--(UNB) – Saying that country’s dairy industry faces a serious setback; the owners yesterday urged the government to allow them to repay their bank loans waiving normal and penal interests. The dairy farm owners also urged the government to convert their loans to a `freeze account’ and allow them to repay the credits in long-term installments, but without the 10 percent down payments. At a press conference the Dairy Association said they don’t expect that their sick industries could be revived. But, its leaders said, they want the favour as they are eager to repay the borrowed bank money. Association president Aftab Uddin Khan, senior vice president Major (retd) Saleh Rahim and general secretary SMA Mannan addressed the press conference, also attended by other leaders. Citing a dozen reasons for their farms becoming sick, they blamed the then 1994-95 government without any feasibility study lured the entrepreneurs through massive advertisements to invest in the sector. Major reasons for their illness were hybrid cows that couldn’t survive in the country’s weather, lack of their proper treatment facility and non-subsidy that exists in India. The association leaders informed that they already had met with Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria and Bangladesh Bank Governor Mohammad Farashuddin who gave positive response to their demands. |
